Background

role: UX & Interaction Designer, Visual Designer, Concept Design
platforms: iOS, wearables

As a UX designer for Nike+ I partnered with mechanical engineer Levi Patton to design an adaptive music experience for the Nike Innovation Kitchen.

Building off of a wearable prototype that generated real-time speed data from a runner and leveraging and advanced music analysis API built by The Echonest, I designed a mobile experience that remixed music tracks on-the-fly to reflect perceived effort. The prototype and concept was patented and grew into an initiative to build a Nike Music SDK to distribute this experience as a shared service across all Nike mobile apps and live events.

App Delivery

The prototype shown in the video uses sensor inputs (accelerometer-based running algorithms and heart rate) to seamlessly navigate between high and low energy moments within a music track, as well as adding or removing musical layers and effects. The runner's intensity creates a live, immersive musical experience and a motivational feedback loop.

The 2 year project grew into a Nike Music SDK initiative which aimed to distribute this experience as a shared service across all Nike mobile apps and live events.
