How might Disney recapture its midcentury optimism and deliver positive visions of the future to young audiences? As a designer for Disney Imagineering I teamed up with OG developer Michael McNabb to answer this question.
Tomorrow is a machine-learning powered editorial experience that organizes content using intelligent threading combined with a custom metric we deemed “Degree of Speculation.” The content and information architecture called for unique navigation and interaction design with a minimalist, positive brand.
Tomorrow lets readers navigate through broad futuristic topics and follow threads across time horizons, immersing themselves deep into the future to imagine a better Tomorrow.

This direction aimed for modern minimalism to “age up” the experience, making it more approachable for teenagers and young adults.
A demographic that was more likely to watch feature length content in low light needed an experience that felt more like a movie theater. We were inspired by the underwater worlds of Finding Nemo and The Little Mermaid. Taking the underwater inspiration further, I designed a system that played with light sources for each nav state to add to the sense of murkiness and mystery. The tab states cast a diffused light in their active states.
